Catalogue Note

With their foliate, beaded and guilloche-carved decoration and their well-formed geometric proportions, the present pair of marquises is closely related to the output of chairmakers like Delanois, Sené, Jacob, and Lelarge. Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené (maître in 1769) produced many examples of seat furniture in a similar architectural style with detailed carving, such as those that he supplied in 1788 for Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette at the Château de Saint Cloud (illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français Du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 2002, pg. 853) or the very similar pair of bergères supplied in 1789 for Madame Elisabeth, the sister of Louis XVI, at the Château de Montreuil and now in the collection of the Louvre.
