Catalogue Note

The fine weave, crisp drawing and strapwork design elements of this carpet are shared with rugs, often woven in part with metal thread, manufactured at Aubusson during the mid-19th century, for examples see Sotheby's New York, June 4, 1988 lot 139; September 24, 1991, lot 163 and April 12, 1996, lot 151.  Larger carpets of similar intricate design to this lot appear to be more unusual, with related examples including Sotheby's New York, September 10, 1996, lot 281; and Christie's Monaco, 28-29 April, 2000, lot 120.
