Condition
Overall in very good original condition. This piece was commissioned by the family of the present owner from Paul Evans and Phil Powell. It is likely that the Nakashima piece was a work in the collection that was adapted and incorporated by Powell and Evans into the present work. The piece was designed to be attached to the wall, and therefore the vertical stations have threaded bolts at the top, which were not included in the catalogue illustration. Please contact the department for an image of the piece installed in the exhibition. For the purposes of the exhibition, the piece was not attached the ceiling. Each of the case elements with pre-existing holes to the reverse which served to mount the pieces. The work was stable throughout when mounted in this fashion. The wooden elements throughout with minor surface scratches, abrasions and edge nicks consistent with use. The proper left wall shelf immediately below the cabinet with the gilt doors with an open fissure in the wood that is inherent in the design. With minor surface dirt to the recessed portions of the design. The silver and gold applied foil cabinet is in excellent condition. The foil with very minor rubbing and wear and presents with vivid coloration when viewed in person. This compartment has two adjustable shelves in the proper right and proper left sides of the case. The sculpturally element below this case is the work of Paul Evans, and is an extremely rare small work. This sculptural design retains the original vivid coloration and has wonderful depth and movement to the shape when viewed first hand. The verdigris cooper loop cabinet by Paul Evans to the center portion of the piece with some minor surface oxidation, light scratches and light surface dirt consistent with use. The interior of this element has no shelves. The Nakashima cabinet with some minor edge nicks, surface scratches and minor surface dirt to the recessed portions. It is likely that pandanus cloth was painted by Evans and Powell and it represents a very characteristic color used in Evans' work. The interior is fitted to the proper right and left with three adjustable shelves. The vertical stations with minor warping as seen in the catalogue illustration. A wonderful and rare work that truly incorporates the work of these three extraordinary craftsman.
