Condition

Overall excellent condition. The dynamic design is further complemented by the richly figured wood selection ranging is deep brown to caramel colored hues. The table shows very gentle evidence of use with a few minor surface scratches. The central portion of the top with a very minor isolated area of surface soiling. The silvered bronze foot has recently been sensitively cleaned and adds wonderful depth to the design. The table opens to reveal a series of intricate compartments for use as a bar, as seen in the additional catalogue images in the print catalogue and available on sothebys.com. The lower portion of the compartments are fitted with mirrored glass which add a wonderful decorative detail to the interior. A truly dynamic work which truly epitomizes Kahn expertise in blending functionality and superb craftsmanship. This piece is a masterwork by the ebeniste.

Catalogue Note

As a cabinetmaker, Kahn learned from great designers of the mid-1920s such as Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann how to elegantly combine precious materials and pure lines. In the 1930s, as a designer, he understood that beautiful form can be enhanced in a dynamic way when a piece of furniture’s practical elements are thoughtfully incorporated into the design.  The present coffee table, which opens into a bar, is the perfect example of Kahn's talent for marrying luxury, functionality and formal aesthetics.
