Condition
Excellent overall condition. The pieces have been examined under black light and show no evidence of prior restoration. The color of the pieces is more orange when viewed in person than seen in the catalogue illustration. The areas adjacent to the wall appear with a darker coloration inherent to the glaze and giving a pleasant depth to the design. The top of one of the sconces with two minor surface irregularities in the glaze, inherent to the making and only visible on close examination. The pieces are electrified with two spring clips at the bottom and the top of the center portion. One of the holes for the fastening of the shade with one minute chip, not visible when the shade is in place. The shades have likely been replaced and present with some light surface dirt, consistent with age and gentle use. One of the shade with a burning mark to the upper proper left side. A wonderful pair of vibrant color and extraordinary design, showing the artist's deep appreciation of forms and color.

Catalogue Note
IN CONTEXT
The dynamic, highly stylized form of these richly glazed sconces was ambiguous but immediately appealing to me. Are they feathers? Leaves? Combs? Regardless, the shape beautifully references the primitive African art as well as the Aboriginal pieces that adorned Uig Lodge.
