Condition
Overall very good original condition. The surfaces with a few minor irregularities, including minute burst air bubbles, inherent to the material and production. With light surface dirt from gentle use. The lower edge of the base with an isolated area of surface irregularities inherent in the production of the work. This same area with a minor edge fleck. This table is presently fitted with a later paper shade that is well-portioned to the lamp base. When viewed in person, the red portions of the lamp base are more saturated than they appear in the catalogue illustration. The patinated metal portion of the upper standard with a few surface scratches and minor discoloration consistent with age and use. With a felt pad to the underside of the base that is obstructing the signature. A wonderful modernist lamp showing great scale and nice nuance to the glaze work.

Catalogue Note
IN CONTEXT
I had collected Lachenal ceramics over the years from this prodigious multi-generational family of ceramicists, and even had a piece dating from the turn of the century by Raoul Lachenal's grandfather, Edward. For a period of time, Lachenal produced ceramics in a rich turquoise glaze that were sold in major department stores during the first half of the 20th century, the likes of Marshall Field and John Wanamaker. This line and its availability through these retailers always held my overall interest in Lachenal’s work. The luminous quality of his ceramic work is the effect of layering a series of high-temperature glazes each in a thick application.
