Condition
Overall in very good original condition. Please note the measurements of this chandelier as it is monumental in scale. The chandelier retains all the original elements comprising: one painted steel suspension frame, 88 blown glass shades ranging from white, yellow, yellow and white stripes, cobalt blue and cobalt blue and white stripes and 87 clear glass droplets ranging from clear to yellow to light blue glass. Each of the glass elements with minor irregularities to the surface, scattered air bubbles and particulates, all inherent in the making. Approximately 10 of the glass shades with minor edge chips, concentrated to the top and lower apertures, consistent with gentle use. Both the glass shades and droplets vary slightly in size, inherent in the making. The droplets with brass hardware to affix to the metal frame that show minor discoloration consistent with the natural aging process of the material. Each of the glass elements displays a beautifully saturated hue. The shades and globes create a wonderful contrast across the chandelier, yet related throughout in the color palette.
The white painted steel frame with scattered losses to paint, surface scratches and a few scattered minor dents as seen in the catalogue illustration. The globes are suspended by eye hooks and one has been replaced with modern hardware and approximately ten of the hooks with minor evidence of bending. The frame may be flush mounted to a ceiling, or it can be suspended at any desired height. This piece is offered without original mounting hardware beyond the steel frame, which can be easily produced by a metal restorer to accommodate a specific installation.
In order to move the chandelier in a safe manner, each of the glass elements needs to be de-installed from the chandelier, which requires disconnecting the electrical sockets. The sockets are fitted to the interior of the shade, and the shade is fastened to the steel frame. The metal frame retains the original labeling for the positioning of the glass specific shade colors. Following the exhibition, Sothebys will be de-assembling the chandelier and the work will be available for collection in this manner. Sothebys has replaced the most of the wiring of the chandelier for the installation and would recommend no greater than a 25 watt bulb in each of the sockets. The total weight of all the elements of the chandelier is 471 pounds.
A superb chandelier that makes a stunning visual statement when viewed in person. Please contact the department for additional photographs of the installed chandelier.
