Condition

Overall in very good condition. This lamp is being consigned by descendants of the original owners and by all accounts the shade, base and finial have all originated together as a unit since the period. This is further supported by the shade leading being gilt to match all of the gilt base components. The shade with approximately 7 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout, which are almost entirely reserved to the lower decorative register of the shade. There are no visible cracks to the larger shield or portal devices in the primary decorative register. The shade with surface soiling throughout to the recessed contours of the glass and to the perimeter contours of the glass tiles adjacent to the shade leading. This shade has an amazing distinct feature: the gold favrile glass which articulates the borders and framing devices are beautifully iridized all throughout the shade exterior. Thus, when the lamp is turned off, it is visually stunning, displaying strong luminosity and a range of brilliant hues to these elements. The overall effect is evocative of a work executed in mosaic glass. The gilt base was recently conserved by a bronze specialist. The interior recessed portion of the cushion base had some isolated surface corrosion. This area was sensitively cleaned, with minor touch ups to the gilding to make it aesthetically cohesive to the rest of the base. The gilt bronze surfaces with some occasional surface abrasions and gentle rubbing, and with light surface soiling to the recessed contours of the design, consistent with age and gentle use. All three sockets and paddle switches appear original and undisturbed. The period gilt finial displays a complementary gilt patina to the base, with light surface wear and minor discolorations. The top knop on the finial was recently re-soldered. The threaded finial pin has been shortened and does not extend sufficiently to properly thread into the finial. If desired this threaded finial pin could be easily replaced. An outstanding example of the model distinguished by its thoughtful and artistic glass selection, and unusual use of iridized glass. The lamp displays beautifully in person, displaying a gorgeous color transition of cobalt to aqua blue below, and thoughtful accents of violet purple throughout the lower register. The shield and portal devices show strong mottling which adds to the visual interest of the lamp. The gold glass throughout is slightly less red than seen in the catalogue illustration.
