- shade impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1548
base impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/28620 and with Tiffany Glass and Decorative Company monogram - leaded glass and patinated bronze
Condition
Overall in very good condition. The shade with approximately 23 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout. There are two small isolated areas of prior restoration on the shade where the leading around two glass tiles was stabilized, as well as a few very small and minor simple repairs to single lead lines. This prior restoration was done in a heavy-handed and obvious manner and has been recently conserved by a professional Tiffany restorer to blend in more cohesively with the shade. There is no evidence of any glass replacement throughout the shade. The patinated bronze base appears to have a tinted shellac application over the original patina on the cushion and standard. The original patina appears to be intact underneath, and if desired, one could explore removing the shellac overcoat and revitalize the original patina. The bronze surfaces throughout with surface scratches, abrasions and rubbing consistent with age and use. The telescoping device on the base functions smoothly, and the base retains its original decorative bronze telescoping knob. Each of the six sockets and paddle switches appear original and undisturbed, and the sockets retain their original bakelite insulators. The base is fitted with a period bronze decorative switch (not original to the lamp). With a replaced finial. A beautiful example of this impressive and graceful Tulip model, displaying a highly artistic and nuanced glass selection. The shade shows a gorgeous color transition in the Tulip blossoms from deep scarlet reds to softer reds and pinks in the lower register. The dusty teal blue geometric bands and foliage are articulated with vigorously mottled glass, imparting the shade with strong visual movement and depth. When seen in person, the glass shows far greater artistic nuance than seen in the catalogue illustration, which is slightly over saturated.
