proponents of the Yogacara school, half-brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu are depicted in debate, receiving the blessings of Maitreya from Tushita Heaven in the upper center, Asanga and Vasubandhu depicted amidst a rocky escarpment adorned with flowers, seated on a raised dais, Asanga crosslegged with shorn head, Vasubandhu bearded with blue skin, wearing the red monastic-style brimmed cap and holding a religious text, the overall execution after an original design by Situ Panchen (1700-1774)

Acquired 1977-1980.

Condition

Areas of wear, rubbing, accretion and water staining overall, as visible in catalogue illustration. Original stitching holes visible in perimeter of cloth. Exhibited in a temporary frame.
