le nom dérive du latin lapis, qui signifie pierre, et de lazuli qui signifie azur et qui vient lui-même du persan (lâdjaward) qui lui –même vient du sanskrit raja varta, qui veut dire portion de roi (raja : roi, varta : portion).
Connue comme pierre ornementale, le lapis lazuli est opaque, de couleur bleue, entre l’azuret l’outremer. Son utilisation est très ancienne, remontant à 7 000 ans.
