Description

  • Carlo Maratta
  • Study of a female Saint
  • Red and white chalk on faded blue paper
  • 188mm x 198mm

Condition

Window mounted twice, an older window mount with red ink framing lines is laid down directly onto the drawing. Another mount has been taped over the top, one corner is not taped down. The sheet has faded in colour and would have been blue originally, this is evident when looking at the verso of the drawing. There is a circular brown stain located towards the lower section of the sheet in the centre and there are a couple of smaller black stains, possibly ink stains, a cluster located upper right and a smaller one upper left behind the Saint's head. Surface dirt and other light staining throughout the sheet. The chalk remains fresh and still quite strong.
