Catalogue Note

This edition is a reprint of the 1593 Lyon edition, which was the first posthumous edition of Montaigne's essays. The publisher was a French Protestant who relocated to Geneva to escape persecution; although the title-page is the first to call this work "Les Essais" rather than just "Essais", however the text has been sanitised to make it less offensive and enable it to be passed by the strict Genevan censors.
