This signed panel is flat and stable, uncradled, but elegantly bevelled on all four edges on the back. The paint surface is very intact, and details are beautiful to observe at close range. The thin contours of the clouds applied very freely with a thin brush, are a wonderful description of the airy substance they portray. Intricate details, like the conent of the low wide boats in th shore, the basket and drapery of the old lady hobbling through the forest, the vines growing in rows upon distant sunny slopes, and the rough branches used to build a simple fence around a farmstead, all these are crisp, well- preserved and a delight to behold. Inspection under UV light reveals infilling of craquelure in a small area of greenery below the castle down to the water. There are tiny areas of spot repair: to the right hand side of the cottage, in the lower left corner, and strengthening of dark contours in the right hand side boat by the foreshore. This lot is offered in a plain wooden frame, with a thin inner gold band, where the paint has been worn considerably. It is in fine condition, and this beautiful piece is ready to hang.
