Description

  • Young man with a flute, half length
  • bears signature and date, lower left: HTB (in compendium) rügghen fecit / 1621
  • oil on canvas
  • 78.5cm x 60.2cm

Condition

This work has been relined and has a slight give in the canvas. There is considerable craquelure throughout, but the paint is stable and does not appear to be flaking. Inspection under UV light shows some infilling of craquelure, particularly in the central areas. Also two very small specks of repair in the lower left corner, and the upper right corner and upper right edge. The boy is fresh-faced and alert, yet gentle, wonderfully suggestive of the music he would play on his flute. This painting is offered in a plain black frame, with two very thin inner bands painted gold. It is in condition and the work is ready to display.
