Provenance

Christie's Monaco, Collection Akram Ojjeh, 11th & 12th December 1999, lot  43.

Condition

The marble top has been restored especially to the rear left corner and along the front section. There is a minor chip to the front edge approx 2cm long where there has been a previous old minor restoration. There are some miniscule and medium side chips along the rear edge and there is a 6cm long chip along the rear edge but this is not too noticable as this is quite shallow. Old very minor marks and chips to the gilding and nice wear to the red bole commensurate with age and normal usage which can easily be touched up. The stretcher has been strengthed where it meets the leg with iron brackets. The piece is slightly dirty and would benefit from a light clean according to tatste. Some chips to the feet have been touched up with gilt paint.

Catalogue Note

Comparative Literature:
Bill G.B. Pallot, The Art of the Chair in Eighteenth-Century, France, Paris, 1989, p.135,  illustrates a design for three console tables by the marché de sculpture and architect Pierre-Noël Rousset for the carver Guillaume Dupré, dated 8th May 1749, (Archives Nationales, Central Records Office (II, 520)). The console table on the far right (see fig. 1.) must surely have inspired the maker of this table with the acanthus carved decoration on the frieze centred within a c-scroll cartouche on cabriole legs entwined by foliate trails with an x-form stretcher centred by a c-scroll cartouche with foliage issuing out of the centre. Pallot calls this `symmetrical rococo-circa 1740-45'.
