of circular form with two loop handles, the bowl with a fixed pierced strainer, painted in white enamel with winged insects and birds flying amongst flowering branches against a deep blue ground, APW mark for De Paauw (The Peacock) factory

Catalogue Note

It was once thought that bowls of this form were used for washing, however it is likely they were herbal wine bowls, which would be filled with either wine or beer, whilst the pierced strainer would be filled with variously spices, citrus fruits, cloves or honey, and left to mull overnight.
