Condition
This imposing cabinet has richly figured veneers and good warm colour. The lower section and upper section seem to have been matched, ie, they are probably sections from different cabinets and were put together at some point in a very accomplished way. There are differences on the exterior veneers, namely on the different exterior banding.
It is in overall good conserved condition, with a repaired shrinking crack to fall front, marks and scratches throughout consistent with age and use, desk with later tooled leather writing surface, veneers with small repairs. Brass hardware largely replaced. Ready to be placed.

Catalogue Note
Although having its distinctively Dutch shaped cornice, this walnut bureau is English inspired, most visibly in its lower section and in its interiors, so similar to its George II counterparts. A walnut bureau cabinet with a very similar cornice, shaped panelled doors and lower section on bracket feet is reproduced by Annigje Hofstede, Nederlandse meubelen: van Barok tot Beidermeier 1700-1830, p. 47, il. 53.
An identical bureau cabinet without mirrored doors sold Christie's 24 February, 1999, lot 244.
