octagonal, engraved with the arms of Gold von Lampoding of Salzburg, also with 1806-24 Salzburg control marks

Condition

A few minor scratches and small dents commensurate with age, marked on bases, sconces and detachable nozzles, generally in very good condition, crisp ornament and engraving, excellent colour and good clear marks.

Catalogue Note

The family of Gold von Lampoding who were raised to the nobility in 1531 acquiring the castle and title of Lampoding in Bavaria, were wealthy traders who largely dealt in the shipment of salt. In 1623, Johann Ulrich moved to  Salzburg in the service of Emperor Leopold I as commandant of the fortress Hohensalzburg, acquiring the title of Baron in 1665. A pair of beakers, a tankard and a pair of salts en-suite with these candlesticks were also sold Christies, London,  12 June 2002 lots 2-5.
