Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Cornelis Wittert, Heer van Valkenburg who married as his second wife  Maria Jacoba van Ouwendijck on 20 November 1707.
The verse inscription which includes the Wittert family name, and image of the mythological Halcyon bird who has its young during a break from stormy weather, refer to the peaceful and fruitful days that have returned again after troubled times. Cornelis Wittert's first wife had recently died, and in the year the cup was made, he married the 23 year old Maria Jacoba van Ouwendijk.
