Catalogue Note
The Fagel family was a distinguished patrician family from The Hague who produced a few eminent statesmen in the 17th Century and 18th Century. Gasper Fagel (1634-1688) was a member representative of the States of Holland, and supported the claims of William III, Prince of Orange, to the English throne. His portrait, painted by Johannes Vollevens was sold at Christie’s London, 13 April 2010, lot 106. His cousin, François- Nicolas Fagel (1655-1718), was a lieutenant field marshal in the service of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, and distinguished himself on many occasions in battles against Louis XIV in Northern France, now Belgium. Finally, François Fagel III (1659-1746) was clerk of the States-General, after his father, Henri, and played an important role especially during the Second Stadtholderless Period (1702-1747). He was also a respected collector of art whose house in The Hague was designed by Daniel Marot and is now part of the Noordeinde Palace, one of the three Royal Palaces. His portrait, painted by Philip van Dijk in 1735, is now at the Netherlands Institute of Art History.
Johanns van Hoecke (1668-1708) was the steady supplier of silverware to the States General from July 1690 until his death in 1708.
