Catalogue Note

This watercolour dates from circa 1830 and shows the famous Chain Pier in Brighton looking west towards the Royal Albion Hotel. At the far left of the watercolour it is possible to see Mr. Lamprell’s circular bath-house. Completed in 1823, it became an architectural landmark in Brighton for thirty-five years. The bustling streets show families dressed in their finest clothing accompanied by an array of dogs, horses and carriages. In the centre of the image a troop of uniformed 'redcoats' can be seen marching along the shore front. We are grateful to Dr Sue Berry for her help in cataloguing this lot.
