Description

  • zitan (Pterocarpus santalinus)
of rectangular section, the cover skilfully inlaid with delicate sheets of mother-of-pearl depicting a bird perched on black soapstone gnarled branches issuing leaves inlaid with malachite and carnelian, various mother-of-pearl floral blossoms borne on the twisting branches, all inlaid on the zitan ground, the rim of the cover and box inlaid with a silver key-fret band, the wood of a warm dark brown colour with characteristic streaks

Condition

There is a 2cm crack to the base. There are tiny losses to the inlays on the cover. Slight rubbing to the silver inlaid key fret borders at the sides. Other general surface wear.
