A Lime-Green Ground Famille-Rose Jar and Cover Seal Mark and Period of Jiaqing

the ovoid body rising to rounded shoulders and a short neck, all supported on a slightly splayed foot, finely decorated around the exterior in bright enamels against a vibrant lime-green ground with a composite floral scroll bearing large flowerheads and peaches, neatly interspersed with auspicious motifs such as the shou character and outstretched bats, wreathed in curling multi-coloured foliage and various auspicious emblems including bats and endless knots, all between bands of yellow-ground ruyi at the shoulders and base, the neck bordered with a floral band, the footring picked out with florets on a light blue ground, the interior and base enamelled in pale turquoise, the base inscribed in iron-red with a six-character seal mark within a square panel reserved in white, the domed cover similarly decorated and set with a compressed globular knop picked out with orange petals

Acquired from a private collector in the Netherlands.

The cover has an approximately 2.5 x 1.3 cm chip to the underside of the rim, which has been slightly ground down. The vase is in overall very good condition. There are some typical burst bubbles, crackles and minor losses to the enameling.

The composition of the decoration on the vase is closely related to a Jiaqing reign-marked green-ground famille-rose vases from the Qing Court collection, still in Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 2008, pl. 172. Both are similarly enamelled with a dense decoration of flowerheads on a composite scroll, bands of ruyi at the shoulder and stylised shou characters in gilt. A smaller yellow-ground jar and cover was sold in these rooms, 8th October 2013, lot 3257.
