Description

  • ivory
carved and pierced in two halves with a floret diaper ground and carved in high relief with a leafy stalk issuing flowers and fruit; together with a Canton ivory brise fan, carved with a quatrefoil panel enclosing the name SUSSIE against a pierced ground of figures amidst gardens, the guard sticks deeply carved with foliage, lacquered wood box

Collection of James Broun Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie and Governor General of India in 1848 -1856.

Condition

Pomander: There is a 3cm long area of damage to the pierced work to the lower section to one side and another smaller area 4mm long to the left of this. Fan: This is in good condition, but the two guard sticks have become detached from the rest of the fan.
