Description

after a design by the Dutch draughtsman Cornelis Pronk, the cistern of baluster shape, painted on either side with cartouches of an archer raising his bow, joined by floral swags and flanked by butterflies, below a lappet band at the shoulder and to the cover with a knopped finial, the large oval basin with a bulbous body and slim shoulder below a wide flaring rim and supported on a spreading foot, similarly painted to both sides with four masks, joined by floral swags, and floral sprays and butterflies to the interior
Condition
The Cistern: There is a filled hole (1.8cm diameter) to one side and a crack to the body that runs from the lower part of the body through the base (32cm). There is some rubbing to the gilding to the band, to the cartouches, below the rim and to the cover. There is an 8mm diameter glaze inconsistency to the interior rim and also some iron-spots and burst bubbles to the glaze.
The Basin: There are two areas of restoration to the rim, one semi-circular (3.5cm by 1.5cm) and the other (5.3cm by 2cm). There is also a 27cm semi-circular crack running to the interior base. There is rubbing to the gilding on the band at the shoulder and a small shallow chip to the underside of the foot (4mm by 4mm). There is numerous iron spots and burst bubbles to the glaze to the interior and exterior.
