A RARE KINRANDE ‘DANCING LADY’ EWER MING DYNASTY, JIAJING PERIOD

Description

intricately modelled in the form of a lady dancing with her left knee raised, her left arm lowered forming the handle and the right arm lifted forming the spout, wearing long robes elaborately decorated in iron-red, turquoise, yellow and green enamels with a mythical beast panel to her chest and outer skirt, her sleeves and underskirt with scrolling clouds and floral tassels, her face pencilled with underglaze-blue features and tied-up hair, later wood cover imitating a high chignon

Condition

This rare ewer is in good condition with the exception of a 3cm., hairline rim crack to the top of the head, repair to a break encircling the top of the right hand, loss to the tip of the left shoe and a small chip to the tip of the spout, minor enamel flakes and light scratches and rubbing.

A closely related ewer from the Sir Percival David collection, and now in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in R.L. Hobson, Chinese Pottery and Porcelain in the David Collection, London, 1934, pl. CXLV; another is published in the Illustrated Catalogue of Tokyo National Museum. Chinese Ceramics, Tokyo, 1965, pl. 515, together with a Wanli mark and period example, pl. 543; and two further ewers were sold in these rooms, the first, 17th June 1937, lot 116, and the second, 6th November 2013, lot 405.
