A LARGE POLYCHROME LACQUER SWEETMEAT BOX AND COVER QING DYNASTY, LATE 18TH CENTURY

Description

  • gilt and painted lacquer
of square form with ruyi-shaped corners, supported on four ruyi feet, the cover set with a raised panel painted with a floral medallion enclosed within ruyi-shaped borders, encircled by butterflies interspersed with entwined melon vines, the ruyi-shaped corners enclosing stylised lotus sprays, the sides with further lotus sprays and square scrolls, all reserved on a red ground, the sides of the box similarly decorated with a keyfret band, the interior with nine shaped sweetmeat trays gilt-painted with lotus sprays on a black lacquer ground

Condition

There is a 6cm by 1cm area and a number of smaller areas of restoration and cracks to the cover. There are various areas of the rim of the base restored, as well as a number of scratches to the lacquer. There are also scratches to the lacquer of the individual trays to the interior.
