the two-coloured stone skilfully rendered incorporating the design with the natural colour of the stone, the black beast carved recumbent with its bifurcated tail curled alongside its rear haunches, the head turned sharply backwards, with a green bird perched on one side, the wings finely detailed with incised feathers

Provenance

Acquired by the parents of the current owners in the UK in the early 20th century.

Condition

The carving is in good condition with the exception of a shallow chip to the top of the lions tail. It should be noted that the stone is of a slightly darker green and grey tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest.
