the front face carved with officials, ladies and attendants in elaborate pavilions in a fenced garden, framed by precious objects above and at the sides, all above rectangular panels enclosing mythical beasts, the reverse with the birds amongst floral branches issuing from rocks, framed by precious objects and above rectangular floral panels
Condition
There are general minor losses and cracks to the whole lacquer surface, with associated overpainting which is particularly evident along the hinged sides.
Viewing from the figural side and counting from the left, the 1st panel has repainting to the upper edge which extended vertically down. There are traces of white paint/glue to the bottom. The 2nd panel has areas of repainting between the two figures and near the tree. There is a crack running vertically from the top to the mid-section near the hinge between the 3rd and 4th panel, with associated overpaint. The 7th panel with a similar long crack near the trees and pavilion.
Viewing from the bird and flowers side and counting from the left, the 1st panel has areas of overpainting around the upper edge which extended vertically down. The 4th panel with overpainting on the bottom right.
