Condition
The colours in this miniature are well preserved. To the left of the composition the artist has extended the ivory, the section to the extreme right has separated from the main sheet. There is some minor paint loss to the extreme left of the work.

Catalogue Note
Zénaide et Charlotte étaient les filles de Joseph Bonaparte et de Julie Clary, fille d’un marchand de Marseille et d’une grande beauté. Leur père Joseph, frère de Napoléon, était roi de Naples puis roi d’Espagne. En 1822, Zenaide épousa son cousin Charles Bonaparte, Prince de Canino, tandis que Charlotte épousa un autre cousin Bonaparte, Louis Napoleon.
Cette miniature est la copie d’un portrait à l’huile peint par Jacques-Louis David en 1825, désormais au Getty Museum Los Angeles (voir A. Schnapper, Jacques-Louis David, Paris, 1989, p. 531)
