One of the earliest books dealing with the natural history of the New England area, especially Maine, where Josselyn and his family settled. The work is notable for the author’s many knowledgeable comments on the medicinal uses and abuses of various flora and fauna, including tobacco. The cranberry, wild turkey, blueberry and other north-eastern species are fully described for the first time.

Josselyn’s first-hand accounts are based on two residences in America, the first in 1638-39 and the second from 1663-71. The work also deals with the practicalities and provisions necessary for the long sea-voyage. It contains as well a catalogue of tools and supplies essential to begin a new life in the colonies.
