FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE EDITOR, 8vo (215 x 129mm.), viii (leaf [a1] is blank but with a presentation inscription: "W.F. Hulton from W.A.H."; leaf [a2] is blank but with an inscription: "Printed by W.A. Hulton. Preston"), 160, 165-234pp. [text complete], 2 maps, 8 plates, polished black morocco by T. Lloyd, spine lettered in gilt, gilt edges and turn-ins, occasional slight spotting or offsetting

The work was privately printed by the author’s brother, William Adam Hulton (1802-1887), and consists of the journal of Dr Jessop Hulton, surgeon on board the Indian navy’s brig Palinurus. It describes his experiences during three voyages as part of the Haines surveying expedition in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabia, Indian Ocean, and the Gulf of Oman. He died of dysentery and malaria on board at the age of twenty-six.
