  • Holmes, Samuel

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo (225 x 135mm.), viii, [iv separately printed subscribers list of 86 names], 256pp., original dark blue paper boards, white paper spine, printed label, uncut, red morocco-backed cloth box, binding worn

An important source of information on Europeans in China during this period and a first-hand account of Lord Macartney's embassy to China.

Presentation copy, inscribed by the editor, "from Sir W. Younge to Wogan Browne July 28 1798 at Huntercombe". The list of subscribers which has just 86 names includes one "Captain Brown", who may well be the recipient of this copy, the editor noting in his preface that he wishes "to confine the possession of the work to the original subscribers". Rare first edition, though clearly of sufficient interest to be translated and published in French, German and Italian.
