Description

  • A Residence in Greece and Turkey; with notes of the journey through Bulgaria, Servia, Hungary and the Balkan. London: Whittaker and Co., 1837
  • PAPER
FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, 8vo (214 x 132mm.), (vol.1) xii, [2], 396pp.; (vol.2) viii, [2], 412pp., 2 lithographed titles, 12 tinted lithographed plates, contemporary dark blue calf, by Ingalton of Eton with his metal ticket, full gilt spines, red labels, marbled endpapers and edges

Hervé travelled to Greece and Constantinople in 1833. His account is littered with entertaining observations on the character and customs of the Greeks. A Royal Academician, Hervé was commissioned by Admiral Church to produce a series of portraits of the leaders of the Greek war of independence and some of those portraits are reproduced in this work. His account also gives an early view of the newly established Greek monarchy at Nauplion.
