Description
- Heriot, George
- Travels through the Canadas. London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1807
- paper
FIRST EDITION, 4to (265 x 200mm.), xii, 602pp., [ii pp. list of plates], folding aquatint frontispiece view of Quebec, 26 aquatint plates, folding map of the St. Lawrence, all hand-coloured, contemporary pale calf, full gilt spine, red label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, some offsetting of plates onto text
A fine copy of "the earliest and most important aquatint book published on Canada" (Hill). Heriot was an accomplished artist and the work is illustrated with plates based on his own drawings.
This is the rare special coloured issue with the backgrounds lightly printed in colour and finished by hand; the engraved captions are printed in blue-green ink. The plates of the uncoloured issue, often coloured later, were more heavily printed in black and had a light yellow wash, and the captions were in black.
