Sir Thomas Herbert went to Persia in the train of Sir Dodmore Cotton, accredited as Ambassador to the King of Persia. He was able to make an extensive tour in the country, visiting Qom, Cashan, Baghdad and other important cities. He also visited the Cape of Good Hope, Madagascar and Surat, and coasted the eastern shores of North America. The final section of the work is entitled "A Discourse and proofe that Madoc ap Owen Gwynedd first found out that Continent now call'd America".
