FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, 12mo (174 x 98mm.), (vol.1) xxiv, 376pp.; (vol.2) vi, 348pp., engraved portrait of the author [signed and dated Oct. 1807 by the author on the recto], 2½ pages of manuscript notes in pencil by William Beckford, contemporary dark blue straight-grained half morocco, gilt spine with the Beckford cross-patté and cinquefoil emblems in the compartments, brown paper boards and endpapers, gilt edges, spotting to portrait and occasionally to text

The Beckford-Rosebery copy. Harriott (1745-1817) was an English seafarer, who helped found the Marine Police Force, and was a magistrate at the Thames police-court from 1798 to 1816. The first volume includes the author's voyages to Gibraltar, Cyprus, Acre, the Cape of Good Hope, Madras, Malaya, and Sumatra; the second volume is almost entirely devoted to North America, and travels through nearly all of the Eastern States, and the Bahamas. Among his adventures Harriott describes being shipwrecked in Plymouth Sound, hawking and hunting in India, slavery in North America, and the purchase of a farm in Rhode Island.
