FIRST EDITION, 8vo (212 x 126mm.), viii, [ii], 284pp., [ii pp. errata], folding engraved map, list of subscribers, contemporary calf, full gilt flat spine, red label, map slightly offset

"The Correspondence in question, would never have been given to the press, if the circumstance of a Lady having accomplished this arduous and hazardous enterprise, had not in itself excited a degree of interest and solicitude, that would never have been bestowed upon the journey of a male traveller... [the author] was solicited by so many of her Ladyship's friends, to present them with copies of his Journal, that he found himself totally unable to comply with their wishes, except he consented to print the Correspondence" (preface). The foot of the title-page bears a contemporary manuscript inscription "but not published". The list of subscribers attests to just 126 copies.

The route was by sea from Bombay to the Red Sea (with observations on Arabia), then overland from Quseir to Qena, north through Egypt, returning home via Malta.
