FIRST EDITION, 4to (270 x 205mm.), xvi, 222, cxxx, [lxxii] pp., [2pp. adverts], half-title, dedication leaf, 6 engraved maps, 5 folding, 9 aquatint plates, 8 hand-coloured, contemporary blue straight-grained half morocco, flat spine gilt in compartments, marbled boards and endpapers, yellow edges, some slight offsetting



"Hall's book… describes… his explorations in the little known eastern seas, and his visit to Canton (Guangzhou). His interview with Napoleon, who had known his father as a schoolboy at Brienne, is also recounted in the book” (ODNB).



The work is notable for aquatint plates after William Havell, who accompanied the embassy.
