Description
- Giles, Ernest
- The Journal of a Forgotten Expedition... Reprinted from the "Adelaide Observer". Adelaide: W.K. Thomas & Co., 1880
- paper
FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo (215 x 143mm.), 26pp., folding map, original yellow printed wrappers, morocco-backed cloth box, title spotted, wrappers worn
Presentation copy, inscribed on the upper cover by the author, "To A.C. Macdonald Esqre Secretary Geographical Society of Australasia (Victorian Branch) with the regards & compliments of the Author Ernest Giles. Melbourne Sept 1886". In addition there is an autograph note by Giles at the end of the text about further expeditions and there are also manuscript alterations to the text.
"Giles's The Journal of a Forgotten Expedition is legendary among collectors [due to its rarity]... The text was set from newspaper articles published in the Adelaide Observer in 1880 and the pamphlet apparently was published for Giles's private use. It shows every indication of having been printed in highly limited numbers for presentation only. The Forgotten Expedition is much sought and one of the veritable high spots in Australian exploration literature" (Wantrup). Only one copy is recorded at auction and the autograph annotations in this copy would seem to support Wantrup's assertion that they were for Giles's use and presentation.
