Francklin spent eight months as the guest of a Persian family in 1786-7 and went on to acquire a reputation as an Oriental scholar, publishing works relating to Persia and Hindostan and contributing translations and essays to the Asiatick Researches and to the Oriental Translation Committee. This first edition, published in Calcutta two years before the London edition, is rare.
