Description

  • Two Voyages to Sierra Leone, during the Years 1791-2-3, in a Series of Letters. London: for the Author, 1794
  • paper
FIRST EDITION, 12mo (175 x 94mm.), viii, 280pp., [iv pp. appendix], half calf by Cross, binders to the king, gilt spine, dark green label, marbled boards

Anna Maria Falconbridge was the wife of Alexander, a slavery abolitionist, who travelled to Sierra Leone to assist in the creation of a settlement of free black people. These lively and informative letters reveal much about the country and its inhabitants. Her husband, who had taken heavily to drink, died in 1792, little mourned by Anna ("his life had become burthensome to himself and all around him, and his conduct to me for more than two years past, was so unkind", p.161), and she appears to have moved into the anti-abolitionist camp. This is the first Englishwoman's account of a visit to Africa and this first edition appears to be very rare.
