Accounts of various missions to remote and isolated Bhutan. Eden, on his mission, was instructed to obtain a treaty, but his position was hopeless, and he only escaped by a series of forced marches. A punitive war against Bhutan followed in 1865 resulting in the cession of land to the British, putting them in direct contact with Tibet in the Chumbi Valley.
