In 1635 Dunton was forced to act as pilot in a Moorish pirate ship ("Sally man of warre") which was intending to take captives off the English coast. She made for the Isle of Wight, where she was captured and Dunton released. The following year Dunton was sent to pilot a reprisal expedition to blockade Sallee at the mouth of the Bou-Ragreg on the coast of north-western Morocco, from which the Barbary pirates or Sallee Rovers operated. Three hundred and thirty nine Christian captives were liberated.
