FIRST EDITION, small 4to (182 x 136mm.), [iv], 108pp., engraved portrait of Drake, double-page world map by Robert Vaughan, calf by Bernard Middleton, gilt edges, expert restoration to foot of portrait and occasionally in the text, mostly lower blank corners, some signatures and marginal glosses slightly shaved
Rare. The first full-length account of Drake's circumnavigation of the world, with an excellent dark impression of the world map. From the library of E.D. Church.
"Between 1577 and 1580 Drake undertook the first circumnavigation of the globe by an Englishman, the next only after that of Magellan's crew. His objectives were to establish trading bases in 'Terra Australis' and the Moluccas, and to raid the Spanish ports on the West Coast of America." (Howgego)
Only two other copies of this book with the portrait and map have appeared at auction in nearly 50 years: the De Orbe Nove Collection copy (Bloomsbury New York, 3 December 2009, lot 79), and the Boies Penrose copy in 1971 (sale in these rooms 7 June, lot 72; with the portrait supplied in reverse). The map in this copy has the engraved instruction to the binder 'Fol.61' in the upper left corner, as Shirley notes some copies have.
