Thomas Davies served for the Royal Artillery in North America and other parts of the world. Over the years, he cultivated an interest in birds, which he collected and drew in his spare time. “His work was of such merit that John Latham frequently quoted him and based some of his illustrations on Davies' drawings” (Christine Jackson, Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World).
