Catalogue Note
"Barkley had spent 13 years in Bulgaria (c.1857-70) as a railway engineer working on the Kustendje Railway and on the Varna-Rustchuk line. He spoke Turkish and was an intelligent observer. This work describes his travels in Asia Minor from August to December 1878, which he made in company with his brother, and it provides a good picture of the state of Turkey at this time" (Blackmer).
