Catalogue Note

VERY RARE. The second and best issue on ordinary paper and with the folding chart (see Holmes).

Dalrymple wrote this pamphlet in response to Hawkesworth's publication of Cook's first voyage, criticising the achievements and importance of the voyage of the Endeavour and disputing claims of new discoveries and including a general attack on the Admiralty. Although Cook was the intended recipient of Dalrymple's wrath, Cook had become a national hero on his return, so Dalrymple chose to attack his editor instead. Hawkesworth's reply in his preface to the second edition (present here), so enraged Dalrymple that he prepared another bitter pamphlet, but this was not published due to Hawkesworth's death on November 16th 1773.
