Catalogue Note

George Anson Byron was a cousin of the celebrated poet. His grandfather John Byron circumnavigated the world with George Anson (see lots 29-38) in 1740-44.

The expedition "was undertaken to convey back to the Hawaiian Islands the remains of King Kamehameha II and his wife Queen Kamamalu, who had died from measles during their state visit to England." Its account provides "much interesting information on Hawaii and its natural history and inhabitants" (Hill).
